In 1945, portals to the terrifying Black Lands – a realm of perpetual night and deadly creatures – began appearing. Decades later, these breaches in reality continue to plague humanity, threatening societal collapse. Felix Renn, a private investigator with a unique understanding of the Black Lands, seeks respite from the supernatural horrors he regularly confronts by taking a seemingly simple missing person case in the quiet town of Sycamore. However, Sycamore holds a darker secret: a serial killer stalks its streets, and the victims bear chilling similarities to those claimed by the Black Lands. As the body count rises, Felix realizes that his escape was an illusion, and the Black Lands’ influence is far more insidious than he ever imagined.

Review Sycamore
Wow, "Sycamore" by Ian Rogers completely blew me away! I'm a pretty avid reader, and this one really impressed me. It's a unique blend of genres – a detective story with a healthy dose of supernatural horror, all wrapped up in what the author cleverly calls "supernoirtural." Think Humphrey Bogart meets Shirley Jackson, and you're getting close!
The premise alone is intriguing: portals to a terrifying realm called the Black Lands are opening up, and our protagonist, private investigator Felix Renn, finds himself smack-dab in the middle of it all. He’s investigating a seemingly simple missing person case in the quiet town of Sycamore, but of course, nothing is ever simple. The story unfolds at a captivating pace, building suspense gradually before culminating in a thrilling, twisty climax.
What I loved most about "Sycamore" was the author's masterful storytelling. He doesn't over-explain, which I really appreciated. He drops you into this world, complete with its established rules and chilling atmosphere, and lets you figure things out alongside Felix. It felt like being let in on a secret, which made the experience even more immersive and thrilling. And speaking of Felix, he's a fantastic character. His dry wit had me laughing out loud several times, providing a much-needed counterpoint to the dark and often terrifying situations he finds himself in. He’s smart, resourceful, and even a little cynical, which made him incredibly relatable. Plus, the supporting characters are well-developed and compelling, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.
The pacing was perfect; it kept me hooked from beginning to end. I devoured the book in a single sitting – it was impossible to put down! One moment I was enjoying Felix’s clever banter, the next I was gripping the edge of my seat as the story plunged into genuinely creepy and suspenseful territory. The way the author blends the investigation of a serial killer with the looming threat of the Black Lands is masterful. It never feels forced or contrived; rather, the two storylines intertwine seamlessly, creating a chilling and satisfying whole.
I also want to praise the author's skill in creating atmosphere. The Black Lands are truly terrifying, and Rogers paints a vivid picture of this nightmarish realm without resorting to excessive gore. It’s the unsettling unknown, the sense of dread and the sheer otherness of it all that truly chills you to the bone.
Finally, I have to say that I desperately hope this isn't the last we've seen of Felix Renn. This book is a fantastic start to what I hope will become a series. The ending left me with so many questions and a burning desire to return to the world of Sycamore and the Black Lands. If you enjoy dark, suspenseful tales with a hint of humor and well-developed characters, this book is an absolute must-read. Seriously, run, don't walk, to pick up a copy!
